10 Things To Do If Your Planning To Start A Jewelry Business

If you have been thinking about starting a Home Jewelry Business? Here is a simple an easy 10-points guideline to transform a hobby into a very profitable career. Check if you’re following the author’s 10 Golden Rules of Jewelry Business Starting.

When I started making jewelry it was just fun. Friend’s inquiries about pendants or earrings really made the dream start to take shape, as it may be happening to many of you. You have started wondering if you could make jewelry for a living. Well, the answer is as simple as YES. Every jewelry artist has started somewhere, and the lucky ones that today show their pieces on jewelry magazine covers started with little or no money and no clues about where the jewelry experience was going to take them.

Making jewelry is therapeutic and profitable, you can make it at home, be your own boss, work at the hours when you feel best and, above all, is a wonderful profession in which you add beauty to people’s lifes through your jewels. Making jewelry is fun!

But why is it that so many jewelry makers, some very talented, fall along the way and never reach their full potential? Mainly, for reasons that do not have to do at all with Jewelry Making, and the most common four are lack of commitment, procrastination, lack of confidence and of course, lack of knowledge about business and marketing techniques.

It is said that it takes 21 days to leave or start a habit. Changing from procrastinator to effective jewelry maker takes less, I think, but many of the things that will start showing its benefits in the (near) future must start being done today!!! Making a big decision like leaving your “proper” job really need a strong commitment to avoid ending up to your nose with debts and wondering “ What did I do wrong?” If you really want to success in this business, here are 10 tips that will help you start avoiding the more common beginner mistakes:

1.This is your trip, not anybody’s: be very careful with the advice you follow and try to stay always within your own limits and desires. Focus on learning the business and stop listening to what people would do if they were you. Read jewelry websites, marketing and sales articles and never stop learning new things.

2.If you don’t have a studio, set up one. Yes, as small business owners we must sacrifice home spaces to our business. Cluttering the dining room or using a small corner will affect directly into your productivity and creativity. You need space, organization, light, and a door you can close whenever you decide your work has finished for today.

3.Organize your time effectively: work as many hours a day as in a “proper” job…well, the truth is that you will find that you will need more than proper job hours to get everything done! As in point 2, we must also sacrifice time.

4.Set up a blog/website. There are many free webs and blogs to choose from. Avoid repetitive descriptions and talk a little about yourself in every post. Take your time to write a good biography and take a good picture of yourself. Read other websites for examples and study the texts – which ones are more appealing to you, and why? Promote yourself in any way you find.

5.Dare to dream – do not underestimate yourself and try every crazy idea that comes to you mind… all of the biggest jewelry artists of the world were somewhere you are now. They made it because they were bold and trusted their own abilities. That business card design or new packaging boiling in your head deserves, at least, a try. What would you lose?

6.Don’t be scared of asking for favours to relative and friends when you’re starting, and always reward them in any way you can. A favour any female member in your family will love to do to you is wearing your gorgeous jewelry on parties and special events, and of course without having to buy it! They will return it to you after showing your jewelry to many people; of course you should provide them with business cards!

7.Learn to make good pics of your work, or you will never sell online. You can make a simple lightbox and digital camera and tripod are necessary. Learn to use the macro and light sensitivity settings of your camera and experiments with backgrounds and displays. Do as above: research and work!

8.Being a jeweler is not only about making jewelry! You can have other incomes coming from the same source. Teach classes or workshops, sell tutorials online, kits, become a gem seller…and if you have html knowledge you could even offer to make websites to jewelers!

9.Don’t wait until everything is perfect to start, because it will never be perfect. If you’re just a beginner, don’t overprice your products. Be honest and humble with your own work, but don’t miss opportunities to show your work in every way you find.

10.Be very patient. There are no fast success stories in jewelry making. You will have to prove you are really commited to your work If you don’t start now, it will never come!

My future plans include writing more articles and downloadable tutorials, as I’m being asked constantly about my wiring techniques.

How to Buy Cheap Jewelry

In this article I want to describe my way of buying jewelry by wholesale prices. One can say that it’s always better to go to jewelry store, take into hands some ring, bracelet or earrings and see whether you like it or one. If you ask me, this works only for those who don’t know what he/she wants. I believe you can understand top quality gemstones or gold quality only by reading descriptions – but not by looking at them by your own eyes. I always want to buy jewelry cheap – below wholesale prices. And the best place to do so is jewelry auction like Go4Bids.com.

Interactive online jewelry auctions are really the best place to by jewelry below wholesale prices. You place you bids, compete against other people – it’s very exciting! And you know that you always buy jewelry below retail price. At jewelry auction, you are making bids, and you always have an idea when to stop. I can try bidding on necklace made of solid 14K yellow gold or blue topaz earrings. If I like some ring or watch, I’m placing auto-bid, and it makes bids on my behalf! And I control the process – I simply define maximum to guarantee that I will buy jewelry below wholesale.

Jewelry auctions are different. At greatest auctions like Go4Bids.com new products appear each 5 minutes. My favorite auction is Go4Bids.com. It offers exquisite jewelry, rings, earrings, brand name wholesale jewelry, necklaces, bracelets, pendants & charms, watches, crystal impression cheap jewelry, glass art, sunglasses and unique jewelry gifts. I am always satisfied with my purchases. Go4Bids.com sends discount coupons to important customers – those who want to buy jewelry below wholesale price. They provide quality cheap jewelry, and their service is great. This is really number one jewelry auction.

But bid smart to be smart! If you want to buy jewelry at cheap price, think twice before you place your jewelry bid. Don’t bid on the products you are bot going to buy. Imagine yourself in another one’s shoos: they want to present yellow gold ring or silver necklaces, and bids for the product – and suddenly you win this auction. Then you change your mind not to buy the product. That’s not fair to other people. What would you if you do want to buy jewelry, but another man wins the aoction – just because they wanted to click Bid Now button. That’s not good to me.

I was always interested why jewelry auctions sell jewelry below wholesale prices. And here are two answers to this question. First, they sell too many products. This gives them fast money turnaround. Because they sell many jewelry to so many people, it is the same like one wholesale buyer bought say fifty rings and twenty necklaces at one time. Second answer is, they have many customers who want to buy jewelry cheap. These customers bid on jewelry. Even if some gold wedding ring is sold below wholesale price, they lose not so much. But because jewelry auctions sell hundreds products each day, they can give such prices for the customers – they can sell quality jewelry below wholesale price, and even this generates some interest for jewelry auctions.

If you really want to buy jewelry at good price, you should know what you want. Examine the market. Visit jewelry stores, and check jewelry prices. Then you need to browse online jewelry auction (again, I do recommend Go4Bids.com) and find all products of that kind. For instance, if you want to buy gold ring – search on the website for gold ring. Check each product you see. Check current price and bid history. Select you ring, and place a bid. Other people who also use jewelry auctions will also be trying to win your ring, but because you know top price you can afford for it, you definitely will buy it cheap. Even if lost – no worries, at Go4Bids.com new products appear each 5 minutes. Wait for another chance, and in one hour you will make ultimately good purchase. This is why I like go4bids jewelry auction very much.

A jewelry auction if #1 place to buy jewelry cheap. To me, this is the only way to buy jewelry below wholesale price. Note, I’m not saying ‘below retail’. Yes, you can buy below wholesale, which means much cheaper than retail! Type in your address bar go4bids.com, and you will understand why I’m there. It gives you the ability to play, to play against other people. Very exciting, relief of endorphins! And after the game you win, and you know that you made a perfect purchase, you bought nice jewelry below wholesale price.
One might still hesitate whether to bid on jewelry auction or not. Well, it’s up to you. Not sure – do not play. But if you played once, and won – no doubt, you would become jewelry auction fan like me. All that stuff, necklaces, rings, watches, crystal glass impressions, etc. – that’s for me. More purchases you make, more valued for the auction you are (obviously!), and more discounts you have! Jewelry auction agents like reliable customers that play fairly. They understand that people want to buy jewelry at below wholesale price; but that’s why they go to jewelry auctions – instead of jewelry stores!

When buying jewelry cheap, I’m always trying to find some balance between price and quality. When I’m buying a present, quality of ring or necklaces is important. I fully trust Go4bids.com jewelry auction. They sell fantastic things of highest quality – no doubt! However, it’s not that easy to buy quality jewelry cheap. But I bid, like other people do. I bid and I win – that is the secret. If you want to buy jewelry cheap or below wholesale price, you must go to Go4Bids.com jewelry auction – best jewelry auction ever.

Handmade Jewelry Business – Road to Success!

Sometimes the road to success leads to wonderful places!  Sometimes the road is bumpy and sometimes filled with potholes!  We have taken the road less traveled…there are times we know why it’s less traveled. We hope you enjoy our stories about our Handmade Jewelry Business!

You’ve got great ideas; unique products and a lot of energy…So off you go to the local craft shows! Everyone loves your handmade jewelry so you come up with more great ideas, fun and fashionable works of art! You move on to juried craft shows in your area and then bigger shows, bigger sales.  Life is great! You are doing something you love and everyone loves your work!

Sales are coming in and you can hardly keep up with your orders. You have to find ways to save time…you never have enough time before the next show.  Eureka, you’ve found the answer and now it’s easier to keep up with orders, sales and traveling to all the best shows. But you’re starting to get tired of running here and there, setting up, tearing down… and the sun… and the rain…and the wind…

Below are some pointers that we learned the hard way along the way in our Handmade Jewelry Business.  Some of the advice might seem simple but most mistakes are simple as well!

Outdoor craft shows and festivals are wonderful and fun to do and a great opportunity to showcase your handcrafted artisan jewelry, when the weather is nice that is.  Unfortunately the weather doesn’t always co-operate with the show schedule.  Always remember the Boy Scout motto: BE PREPARED!  These are just a few suggestions to keep everything going well:

1.  Always have materials available to weigh down your canopy.  We always had weights like paint cans filled with concrete, cinder blocks, empty jugs to fill with water for extra protection from the wind lifting your tent to OZ.  Sometimes you will have to hang on as well!  This is especially important if you are in Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Art Festival; the canopy was being lifted right into the air!  What goes up must be held down!

2.  Always carry hammer, nails, wire, small pieces of wood, string, rope and the like.  We liked to make sure all our display boards were securely hammered to the tables so they wouldn’t tip over on a customer’s head when the wind blew.

3.  Make sure to have all extra stock in watertight containers, especially for jewelry that is on cards or can be damaged by water.  If the cards get wet or dirty it can really be a mess.  You will appreciate this more when you are up to your knees in water, mud and sawdust!

4.  Try if possible to put earrings on display boards or frames.  This makes it much easier and quicker to pack up just in case of a storm or tornado.

These are just a few suggestions to those starting out on the craft show circuit.  It may not sound like a lot of fun but I sure miss those “good old days”!  It was a wonderful way to spend the summer and make some money besides!

Next step on the road to success- Wholesale Handmade Jewelry!  Not as many shows and bigger sales.  You focus on your craft and can actually enjoy a long weekend!

Tips In Buying Jewelry

When a man decides to please a woman with a gift, the chances of being successful is high when he buys her jewelry. Flowers are nice but many women are picky with flowers. On the other hand, jewelry, especially if it is in a set, will certainly be appreciated. This is because earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, according to a mysterious feminine logic, are considered necessities, along with makeup and shoes. But fake or cheap jewelry will not impress the sophisticated female. To avoid being taken in by phony jewelers, here are some tips to remember when buying the most sought after types of jewelry: gold and diamond.

Gold;

When buying gold, the first thing to learn about is the word karat. The karat is the unit used to represent the proportion of gold in the piece of jewelry. Pure gold is set at 24 karats but there is no 24-karat gold jewelry because pure gold is too pliable to be fashioned into any form of jewelry. The popularly sold gold jewelry are 18-k (75% gold), 16-k (66.67% gold), 14-k (about 58% gold), and 12-k (50% gold). The smallest karat value for a piece of jewelry to be considered gold is 10-k (42% gold). If a piece of jewelry has less than 10-k, it cannot be considered as gold. Professional jewelers call these low-karat gold pieces as gold-plated or gold-overlay.

Diamonds;

When buying diamond, there are four aspects that must be considered. These are the cut, the color, the carat, and the clarity of the diamond. Of these four aspects, the most important is the cut of the diamond. Diamonds can be hand-cut or machine-cut but it does not really matter whether the diamond cutter is man or machine as long as the diamond is cut to achieve the greatest symmetry and brilliance. A diamond cut does not refer to the size or shape of the diamond. It refers to depth and width, symmetry, and polish. If the depth and width of the diamond were precisely and ideally cut, they direct light to travel deep into the bottom part and then bring back that light to shine brightly on the surface. The facets of the diamonds should be balanced and this is called symmetry. And finally, the cuts should be made through specific lines to avoid chipping off the surface.

There is also the issue of diamonds being mined in Africa to finance and support the various conflicts in this continent. Such diamonds came to be known as blood diamonds. Blood diamonds may not be suitable for a jewelry which is intended to express love. Fortunately, the reputable companies involved in the diamond industry have established a tracking system for diamonds to reveal the area where they were mined and the store where they were sold. To ensure that the diamond jewelry is in no way related to any African conflict, there must be a written guarantee that will accompany the invoice of the jewelry.

And finally, whenever buying jewelry such as gold, diamond, or any other gemstone, it is best to deal with jewelers of good reputation. They would be upfront and honest about the jewelry that they are selling. It is also a prudent idea to avoid huge discounts. Jewelry is unlike clothing or appliances. The value of jewelry does not depreciate and therefore, the original price found on the sale tag is not the actual value of the jewelry.

Why Silver JewelryCan Be A Better Investment Than Gold Jewelry

The historic price ratio of silver to gold shows that about 10 ounces of silver would buy one ounce of gold, a 10:1 ratio. Recently, the ratio is about a 50:1 ratio (with silver at $20/oz., and gold at $1000/oz.) As the silver to gold ratio returns to historic values, from 50:1 to 10:1, you may make over 5 times more money investing in silver, than gold!

More than all of the silver produced by the mines each year is consumed by industry, which leaves little to no room for substantial investment demand. A marginal increase in investment demand will drive prices sky high.

Most silver is produced as a by-product of mining gold, copper, zinc, or lead. Higher silver prices might not substantially increase the amount of silver mined each year. Consider, in 1980, when silver prices went up to $50/oz., less silver was mined than in 1979.

So watts this mean to the jewelry sector ?.Simple a huge increase in the cost of silver jewelry and with that will come a bigger demand by the general public.

Now this is were it gets tricky ,if you are a jewelry retail shop or a customer you have to be sure that the silver your selling or the silver jewelry item your buying is of the highest standard,98%fine silver is the best.It is quickly becoming the new fashion standard.

At present 90% of all silver is made to a standard 925%Sterling silver, which means it has a small amount of impurities added ,However for an investment this just isn’t good enough .and it gets worse ,if you do buying trips for silver from lets say to Asian countries, the majority of silver in street stalls would not pass the assay test 925 that’s because the manufacturer has added large amounts of copper or bronze with the silver in order to be able to sell it cheap.

There are no tricks to buying silver ,firstly you must establish a good customer relationship with a reputable manufacture or wholesaler.

Secondly he should be happy to provide documentation of were the raw silver comes from with a assay test certificate.

Thirdly try and buy silver that’s Monogrammed,Customers love having designer name brands such as KDL,and you will find that if a manufacturer is name stamping his silver jewelry he has a reputation to protect.

So to sum things up ,Yes invest in silver jewelry ,but only in 98%pure silver ,wear it ,use it and wait for the price increase then you truly have a valuable asset ,you can even have it melted down and re sell the silver .Its a win win over gold .Even if gold increases in price it will not match the percentage profit that silver is now starting to return.

I have been Manufacturing silver and gold jewelry for 10yrs ,and specialize in fine silver and 24karet gold .Together with my wife we have helped hundreds of retailers reach there marketing goals. www.silver925-wholesale.com .
