Flexible And Strong Beading Thread

Essential Beading Thread

Beading jewelry will not be possible without a strong and flexible beading thread so picking the right thread for your beading project is essential. Other artisans have their own preferences for, beading threads have different character and properties, and sochoosing the best for your jewelry project and ease of making the jewelry projectwill definitely be your number one priority when buying beading threads.

As compared to clothing, some people prefer the feel of silk on their skin, and some like the softness of cotton. Some beading threads may work well with crystal, seed, and wooden beads, but generally these threads will be the base material for any of your jewelry pieces. So just think of what’s the best you can get when choosing a beading thread.

Types Of Beading Threads

You need to have a working knowledge on the kind of beading thread you are going to use for your jewelry making project and among those choices are:

Nym o Thread

Nymo thread – a stronger silk-like thread that was first produced for shoemaking. Great for seed beads jewelry project because it is creates a more elastic result and it comes in bobbins and spools, though you need to wax it before using.

C-Lon

C-Lon – A polymer thread that is stronger than Nymo. If you are looking into durability and strength of a project, then you should take into consideration the C-Lon beading thread.

Silamide

Silamide – Used for bead weaving and known for its strong quality that also belongs to the nylon family. This thread was developed originally for upholstery but the variety is limited compared to Nymo and C-Lon beading threads. This is great when you are working on bead embroidery done with delica seed beads.

Fireline

Fireline – is extremely strong and is renowned to jewelry making industry as beading thread that can hold up heavy beads and withstand rough edges of the crystal or bugle beads. One disadvantage though is it’s thicker than the usual beading thread that can be compared to fishing line threads and so it is harder to make loops at the end. Try to look for large hole beads for this kind of beading thread then.

There are more beading threads you can find in the market but these four are the most commonly used threads of jewelry artists today. Choose your preference and make each beading project a masterpiece.

Beading Thread Sizes

Beading threads come indifferent sizes starting from 00 as the thinnest, to A, B, C, D, E, F, FF, and G as the thickest. Fire Mountain Gem’s Beading Thread Chart is by far the only website that has a comprehensive chart on sizes in inches and millimeters according to the sizes of the beading thread.

It is important to note that these beading threads will affect most of your bead jewelry project if you were not able to choose the perfect size. The jewelry piece will come out too tight or too slack if the beading threads do not match the weight and properties of the beads, so better choose the right one for you.

How To Measure Beading Thread For Your Jewelry

Measure! Always measure. If you are planning to make a bracelet, then measure the wrist exactly not leaving space for leeway. The space that occupies the use of findings and clasps will be your breathing space for a more flexible bracelet. It is the same with making necklaces or anklets.

Key to a perfect piece of jewelry is through correct measurement in beading threads or the exact numbers of beads used. Wiki How shows how to measure thread for beading in a simple way that everybody can understand.

Beading thread is as important as beads in bead jewelry; you have to get to know how it works and continue yourself to be updated of current trends in bead jewelry making.

Working With Alphabet Beads

Alphabet beads are also known as letter beads. They come in plenty of forms, even pewter and sterling silver to make them look more sophisticated. These can be used to create and personalize just about anything from beaded friendship bracelets to key chains which makes them a great project to do with kids.

Alphabet beads make for a great design on jackets, bags, and key rings. To work with alphabet beads you would need beading elastic, scissors, and a selection of other colorful beads. Make sure that you take your kid with you to the crafts shop and bead stores so they can choose the alphabet beads that they want. They should know beforehand what it is that they want to spell. They can spell their name or even a short sentence such as “I love Mommy”. Here is a simple way to create a bracelet out of alphabet beads.

Choose the type of string or elastic to make your bracelet with. There are many different kinds of stringing material available so make sure that you choose one that is easy to work with. When buying your alphabet beads, select those that have contrasting background and letter colors so that you can see the words you spell out better. You would need six 27-inch strands of material to make the bracelet with. Clip them on to a clipboard to secure them while you are making the knots. Wrap three strands over and under the last three strands to create a single knot. Keep doing this until you reach the middle of the bracelet. Once you have done so start putting the beads in, spelling out the words or name that your kid has chosen. Make the remaining knots, ending with one final knot to finish the bracelet.  As easy as that and you are all beaded up.

Alphabet beads are also a great addition when making friendship bracelets. Your kid can make one with her name and one with her best friend’s name. Or they can make double strand bracelets with both their names on it. Either way alphabet beads are a great shout out to their friendship.

Don’t think, however, that alphabet beads are confined to children’s jewelry. They also make great accessories for grown women. Just choose a more sophisticated material to make the bracelet with and maybe get beads that are made of sterling silver. You can spell out something that pertains to your personality or even the names of all your children. Be bold and express your identity with alphabet beads. Everyone has a lot to say and this is a great opportunity to do that.

Beads and Nature

Nature has been, is, and will always be a part of us. It is everywhere. It is connected with everything that we do, especially when it comes to the arts. Well the art of beading is no exception because there are beads that can actually come from nature itself! This is one of the reasons that beaded jewelry making.
is such a popular pastime as it is so diverse in the types of materials that you can use and therefore the variety of designs you can create.

These kinds of beads are very alluring because they are nice alternatives from the industrially-made plastic or handmade glass beads. They also are a lot lighter so you can use a lot of them and not worry about your jewelry not being wearable. They are great accessories during the summer time or when visiting a tropical country.

Wooden beads are probably the first thing that comes to one’s mind when talking about beads from nature. There are so many types of wood to choose from. There’s bamboo, sandalwood, and rosewood to name a few. And since wood has a pattern of its own, the combinations are seemingly endless. Wood is also very alterable. You can color it and change its shape whichever way you want. You can even burn it too! Another great thing about wooden beads is that they are very easy to combine with other natural beads.

Another gift from nature that we can use for beading is freshwater pearls. These come in all sorts of colors, shapes, and sizes. They can be pretty expensive, especially if they are good quality pears but if you look hard enough you can find some that are less expensive.

Ah, shell beads. Who can resist them? They have the most beautiful colors and you can even pick them on your own. All you have to do is drill a whole into them. Be careful when doing this though as you can easily hurt yourself if you are not familiar with what you are doing.

What is more natural to us humans than bone? But take not that the ones used for beading are not from humans! They usually come from cows and camels. Bone is so versatile and so easy to change. Soaking it in coffee or tea will instantly give it a nice darker color. Soaking it in bleach, on the other hand, will leave you with a brighter looking bead.

The good thing about natural beads is that you can easily manipulate their colors. Dyes usually give the desired effect. Doing this is very easy and quite inexpensive. The textures also differ. But despite this it is very easy to combine one natural bead with another. Make sure to use hemp and it instantly fits with the overall theme of nature. Incorporating natural materials in our designs has become very enticing jewelry for men and women as we are all becoming more environmentally conscious.

Where Do You Get Your Beading Ideas?

It is a frustration for most designers and any creative person when they run out of ideas for their projects. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the term “writer’s block”, meaning that a writer will find it hard to think of something new to write or to finish off something that they are already writing. Well for beaders out there we have what we call “beader’s block” as well. This happens when for some reason you simply cannot think of a new idea or design for your beadwork or you have no clue as to how to finish a pattern that you have already started. Let’s try to look at some things we can do to help get over this.

A good place to start is figuring out where you currently are. What are the things and materials that you already have at your disposal? What types and colors of beads are in your drawers and containers? Sometimes the simple act of looking at these handmade glass beads is enough to get your creative juices flowing. Psychologists say that mind block is common when you are in an environment of disarray and confusion so naturally the first way to try and combat this is to keep yourself organized. The brain is a powerful organ and very capable of multi-tasking so you might not even notice it coming up with new ideas while you are in the act of organizing.

All this fixing and shelving of your materials will get you tired at the end of it so it’s good to find some time off for yourself. When your brain is tired you won’t get to do much and it will feel like you are overworking it. Resting is also a good time to allow your brain to process the ideas that it developed during the organization exercise. How do you usually spend your relaxation time? Do you read, visit a friend, or walk around? Give your mind some time off from the whole beading activity and let it wander on to other topics. When you get back to thinking about beads your brain will be very refreshed and free of old, tired ideas.

When you think you are rested enough, look through some old material about beading. Do you have magazines and books lying around? Or maybe you can look through some websites online, try finding jewelry making patterns. The rest period you had prior to this will allow you to look at these with a new eye and perspective no matter how old the magazine or book is. Still try to keep that atmosphere of relaxation by codling up on a chair or drinking your favorite relaxing beverage. Don’t try and scrutinize every design you see. Just let your brain call out to you when it sees something that sparks your interest. Appreciate the designs instead of trying to analyze them. Finally, visit a few craft stores and other bead stores where art abounds. Art is not constricted to a single type of form so even those that are not related to beading might give you that idea that you need.

When you’re ready to start thinking of ideas again, sit down and write down all the new ideas that are sure to be flowing in your head by now. Don’t be afraid to try anything at this stage.
