Bugle beads are cylindrical glass or metal tubes that vary in sizes and color, quality, and country in origin. It is important to note that when you are planning to use bugle beads for your jewelry making, you need to look at a few factors.

One is consistency in length. More than the design itself, you should be able to gather and examine same length bugle beads to hasten your jewelry making. Otherwise, you will have to scramble through hundreds of bugle beads to find matching sizes.

Another is color and its grain, be it matte, transparent, metallic, opaque, and silver-lined bugle beads. Depending on your customer’s preference, you should know how to mix and match these bugle beads pieces into making a dazzling jewelry piece of art.

You should also keep in mind that there are different shapes as well including round, twisted, and hex or hexagon like a shape of a diamond. And finally, take into consideration smooth round ended edges to prevent beading threads from cutting off with the knife-like edges of bugle beads.

Why Are They Named Bugle Beads

Because it is cylindrical and conical in shape that resembles that of a bugle as a musical instrument, thus bugle beads came about. It is facetted with round, twisted, and hex body but still it is tube like and long in most cases.

Others make an initiative to put a clear nail polish just about the edges or file it maybe. But the beast thing to eliminate if not lessen the head ache of trying to thread it smoothly is putting spacers or seed beads in between the bugle beads.

The jewelry piece will come out even more beautiful with its glitters and sparks dancing with the lights. Such a dreamy scene needs more creativity and style in you. Bugle beads are inexpensive but a multifaceted bead you can use for your next jewelry making ventures.

What Are Spacer Beads

Spacer Beads Advantage

Jewelry making needs spacer beads to enhance and strengthen a piece of jewelry. They come in lentils, daisies, rods, or crystals and normally have one hole for stringing and three holes in the case of rods shaped spacers and are sometimes called spacer rods.

To fully accentuate a jewelry design, spacer beads are used to make the jewelry piece intact. Any small beads can be used for spacer beads; it serves a purpose why it’s there. It breaks the monotony of beads or gemstones and spacer beads come in many designs and shapes depending on style and color that you are going to use.

Beads Spacer Function

Often, the use of square end beads makes it difficult for artisans to bend wire to become a bracelet or neckpiece, so a round beads spacer will be the most economical way to your piece of jewelry without breaking or placing tension on the hook. A Grain of Sand has a vast showcase of different shapes, sizes, and designs depending on your preferences.

It is more like putting a space to the design and allows the jewelry piece to breathe and create a more natural look for it to be more bendable and will fit to the wrist or neck of your customers. Because beads spacers are intended to go unnoticed, often its versatility comes in many forms to blend with the whole design.

Spacer Beads Material

Beads spacers can be in different materials such as polymer, metal, crystals, metal, plastic, sterling silver, and gold. These substances can be mixed and will bring together whatever material you want to use for certain jewelry.

Sometimes it pays to know your materials as some materials do not work well with your chosen spacer beads. Crystal beads and metals beads spacers may work well together but polymer or fimo beads and crystal beads may not always work well and look good together when combined to form a jewelry piece.

But, any artisan will agree that the uniqueness and authenticity of the jewelry depends on the artisan’s well thought design and style. Creating these stunning pieces of jewelry requires careful planning and correct use of materials, something that won’t fall off and will not create friction between each bead.

Spacer beads are important components of bead jewelry making. Its presence, though projected to be unseen is needed for a piece of jewelry to be fully functional. Always remember to use its maximum capacity but not overstuffing it, it is not called spacer beads for nothing. Keep it to minimal pieces and emphasize its unique feature, beads spacers make your jewelry piece a desired collection by your customers.

Working With Alphabet Beads

Alphabet beads are also known as letter beads. They come in plenty of forms, even pewter and sterling silver to make them look more sophisticated. These can be used to create and personalize just about anything from beaded friendship bracelets to key chains which makes them a great project to do with kids.

Alphabet beads make for a great design on jackets, bags, and key rings. To work with alphabet beads you would need beading elastic, scissors, and a selection of other colorful beads. Make sure that you take your kid with you to the crafts shop and bead stores so they can choose the alphabet beads that they want. They should know beforehand what it is that they want to spell. They can spell their name or even a short sentence such as “I love Mommy”. Here is a simple way to create a bracelet out of alphabet beads.

Choose the type of string or elastic to make your bracelet with. There are many different kinds of stringing material available so make sure that you choose one that is easy to work with. When buying your alphabet beads, select those that have contrasting background and letter colors so that you can see the words you spell out better. You would need six 27-inch strands of material to make the bracelet with. Clip them on to a clipboard to secure them while you are making the knots. Wrap three strands over and under the last three strands to create a single knot. Keep doing this until you reach the middle of the bracelet. Once you have done so start putting the beads in, spelling out the words or name that your kid has chosen. Make the remaining knots, ending with one final knot to finish the bracelet.  As easy as that and you are all beaded up.

Alphabet beads are also a great addition when making friendship bracelets. Your kid can make one with her name and one with her best friend’s name. Or they can make double strand bracelets with both their names on it. Either way alphabet beads are a great shout out to their friendship.

Don’t think, however, that alphabet beads are confined to children’s jewelry. They also make great accessories for grown women. Just choose a more sophisticated material to make the bracelet with and maybe get beads that are made of sterling silver. You can spell out something that pertains to your personality or even the names of all your children. Be bold and express your identity with alphabet beads. Everyone has a lot to say and this is a great opportunity to do that.

Make Jewelry using African Beads

Africa has been making jewelry crafted by hand for a very long time in keep with their traditions and they use African beads which come in a wide variety of colors and shapes as well as textures. You can now make your jewelry yourself using inspiration from the African styles and the raw materials like trade beads that the African jewelers themselves make use of. You can make simple African jewelry like necklaces or pendants or something as complicated as the pieces that are normally used by Africans for their rituals in healing and their spiritual ceremonies. All you require is the African beads or trade beads, a clasp, some jewelry cord or wire, crimping pliers and crimping beads. If you look at pictures or piece of African jewelry you are sure to draw inspiration from these and be able to create your own designs. Tribal jewelry from Africa includes the bone necklaces from Kenya, the coconut disc necklaces from Nigeria, crosses from Ethiopia and the Mali wedding beads. Settle on a particular style. If you would rather make a necklace with a lone pendant, then search for a bead that has an attractive color or pattern. If you intend putting together several African beads, put them against a neutral background like the black velvet that most jewelers use to find out how they combination looks. A pendant can also be put together with smaller trade beads. Get hold of some good African beads. There are quite a few sites on the Internet that deal with trade beads and other African beads and jewelry supplies and these companies buy them directly from families who make them in Africa.  Some of the pieces might be very old or of limited versions and be sold at a very high price while the other trade beads are more affordable. Measure out the required length of beading thread that you will require. The length should be ideally the length that you want your necklace of trade beads to be plus an extra five inches. If you would like to use bigger African beads then you might like to replace the beading thread with cotton cord or leather. If you choose to use wire to thread them, put a crimp bead on one end along with one part of the clasp. Pass the wire through the crimp bead, make sure you tighten it and then flatten the bead with the help of the crimping pliers. The extra wire should be trimmed off.   Start stringing the beads. If you are looking to have a pattern that is symmetrical, start with the center and keep adding African beads on either side. Add the other part of the clasp or a jump ring if you are using a hook clasp. Draw the wire through the clasp and cut off the extra. And then wear you beautiful necklace of trade beads and watch the heads turn.

For a wide variety of African beads visit us; you can choose from Mali Wedding beads, Red Tomato beads and several other trade beads.

Beads and Nature

Nature has been, is, and will always be a part of us. It is everywhere. It is connected with everything that we do, especially when it comes to the arts. Well the art of beading is no exception because there are beads that can actually come from nature itself! This is one of the reasons that beaded jewelry making.
is such a popular pastime as it is so diverse in the types of materials that you can use and therefore the variety of designs you can create.

These kinds of beads are very alluring because they are nice alternatives from the industrially-made plastic or handmade glass beads. They also are a lot lighter so you can use a lot of them and not worry about your jewelry not being wearable. They are great accessories during the summer time or when visiting a tropical country.

Wooden beads are probably the first thing that comes to one’s mind when talking about beads from nature. There are so many types of wood to choose from. There’s bamboo, sandalwood, and rosewood to name a few. And since wood has a pattern of its own, the combinations are seemingly endless. Wood is also very alterable. You can color it and change its shape whichever way you want. You can even burn it too! Another great thing about wooden beads is that they are very easy to combine with other natural beads.

Another gift from nature that we can use for beading is freshwater pearls. These come in all sorts of colors, shapes, and sizes. They can be pretty expensive, especially if they are good quality pears but if you look hard enough you can find some that are less expensive.

Ah, shell beads. Who can resist them? They have the most beautiful colors and you can even pick them on your own. All you have to do is drill a whole into them. Be careful when doing this though as you can easily hurt yourself if you are not familiar with what you are doing.

What is more natural to us humans than bone? But take not that the ones used for beading are not from humans! They usually come from cows and camels. Bone is so versatile and so easy to change. Soaking it in coffee or tea will instantly give it a nice darker color. Soaking it in bleach, on the other hand, will leave you with a brighter looking bead.

The good thing about natural beads is that you can easily manipulate their colors. Dyes usually give the desired effect. Doing this is very easy and quite inexpensive. The textures also differ. But despite this it is very easy to combine one natural bead with another. Make sure to use hemp and it instantly fits with the overall theme of nature. Incorporating natural materials in our designs has become very enticing jewelry for men and women as we are all becoming more environmentally conscious.

Where Do You Get Your Beading Ideas?

It is a frustration for most designers and any creative person when they run out of ideas for their projects. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the term “writer’s block”, meaning that a writer will find it hard to think of something new to write or to finish off something that they are already writing. Well for beaders out there we have what we call “beader’s block” as well. This happens when for some reason you simply cannot think of a new idea or design for your beadwork or you have no clue as to how to finish a pattern that you have already started. Let’s try to look at some things we can do to help get over this.

A good place to start is figuring out where you currently are. What are the things and materials that you already have at your disposal? What types and colors of beads are in your drawers and containers? Sometimes the simple act of looking at these handmade glass beads is enough to get your creative juices flowing. Psychologists say that mind block is common when you are in an environment of disarray and confusion so naturally the first way to try and combat this is to keep yourself organized. The brain is a powerful organ and very capable of multi-tasking so you might not even notice it coming up with new ideas while you are in the act of organizing.

All this fixing and shelving of your materials will get you tired at the end of it so it’s good to find some time off for yourself. When your brain is tired you won’t get to do much and it will feel like you are overworking it. Resting is also a good time to allow your brain to process the ideas that it developed during the organization exercise. How do you usually spend your relaxation time? Do you read, visit a friend, or walk around? Give your mind some time off from the whole beading activity and let it wander on to other topics. When you get back to thinking about beads your brain will be very refreshed and free of old, tired ideas.

When you think you are rested enough, look through some old material about beading. Do you have magazines and books lying around? Or maybe you can look through some websites online, try finding jewelry making patterns. The rest period you had prior to this will allow you to look at these with a new eye and perspective no matter how old the magazine or book is. Still try to keep that atmosphere of relaxation by codling up on a chair or drinking your favorite relaxing beverage. Don’t try and scrutinize every design you see. Just let your brain call out to you when it sees something that sparks your interest. Appreciate the designs instead of trying to analyze them. Finally, visit a few craft stores and other bead stores where art abounds. Art is not constricted to a single type of form so even those that are not related to beading might give you that idea that you need.

When you’re ready to start thinking of ideas again, sit down and write down all the new ideas that are sure to be flowing in your head by now. Don’t be afraid to try anything at this stage.
